About this tax calculator
Understand progressive tax brackets before filing
The FreeConvertors tax calculator applies the US federal progressive tax bracket system. In a progressive system, every extra dollar of income is taxed at the rate of the bracket it falls into, so higher income is taxed at higher marginal rates without penalising the earlier brackets. This calculator shows the whole ladder: which part of your income is taxed at which rate, and what that adds up to.
Enter your annual gross income, select your filing status and choose between the standard deduction or a custom deduction amount. The tool subtracts the deduction, walks your taxable income through each bracket and reports the estimated tax owed, your effective rate and your marginal rate.
Effective rate vs marginal rate
The marginal rate is the tax rate applied to your last dollar of income — the bracket you are currently in. The effective rate is your total tax divided by your total income, which is almost always lower because earlier income is taxed at lower rates. Both numbers matter when you plan raises, bonuses or deductions.
Important limitations
This is an estimation tool. It does not include state or local income tax, payroll tax, tax credits, capital gains, itemised deductions or special situations like self-employment. Always confirm your final numbers with a qualified tax professional or the official filing guidelines for your region.
